Basketball icon inspires young athletes at youth clinic
DUBAI: Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline & Group, welcomed NBA legend James Worthy at Emirates Group Headquarters today, marking the official tip-off of the much-anticipated Emirates NBA Cup 2024.
Worthy, a Hall of Fame basketball player known for his career with the Los Angeles Lakers, personally brought the NBA Cup trophy to celebrate the start of the inaugural tournament, which begins today.

During his visit, Worthy met with Emirates Group employees, shared stories from his illustrious career, and signed autographs. "It’s an honour to be here in Dubai to help tip off this unique NBA event and bring fans closer to the excitement of our sport," Worthy stated.

Youth Clinic in Dubai
In line with Dubai Fitness Challenge and to foster a love of basketball among the UAE’s youth, a basketball clinic was later held at Zabeel Park. Children aged 8 to 13 from Al Nasr Club participated, honing their skills and learning directly from Worthy.
The clinic served to inspire young players, helping them improve their techniques while instilling values of teamwork and perseverance.
NBA veteran’s legacy on display
Known as “Big Game James,” Worthy is celebrated as a seven-time NBA All-Star, 1988 NBA Finals MVP, and a three-time NBA champion. The Lakers’ legend is one of the league’s most revered players, having also been named to both the NBA’s 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams.
"Connecting with young players here in Dubai, sharing what I’ve learned—it’s all about giving back to the game," Worthy remarked at the clinic.

The Emirates NBA Cup officially begins today, featuring two high-stakes games: the New York Knicks face off against the Philadelphia 76ers at 7:30 p.m. ET, followed by a showdown between the Golden State Warriors and the Dallas Mavericks at 10 p.m. ET.
